Shupatto Bag Review: Is It Worth It?

If you've ever rummaged through your bag at the supermarket checkout, desperately trying to unfold a crumpled tote while the cashier waits, you'll understand why the Shupatto bag feels like a small revelation the first time you use it.

It folds flat in one pull. That's it. That's the magic!

But is it actually worth buying? I've been stocking Shupatto bags at Lowland Summer for a while now, and here's my honest take.

What Is the Shupatto Bag?

Shupatto is a Japanese bag designed by Marna, a Japanese lifestyle brand with a long history of creating thoughtful, clever everyday products. The name roughly translates to "snap" or "in a flash" in Japanese, which is exactly how the bag folds up.

The design is built around accordion-style pleating, inspired by the world of fashion and origami. When you're done using it, you simply pull both ends of the bag outward and it collapses flat along the pleats. Roll it up, tuck it away. The whole thing takes about three seconds.

It's won the Red Dot Design Award and the iF Design Award, which tells you something: this isn't just a practical bag, it's a well-engineered one.

How Does It Actually Work?

This is the bit people are always curious about, and honestly it's easier to understand once you've held one.

The bag is made from polyester with built-in accordion pleats running across it. When you open it, the pleats expand and the bag takes shape. When you're ready to pack it away, you pull the two strap ends sideways and the pleats collapse back on themselves. The bag goes completely flat. You roll it from one end, and it stays rolled without needing a pouch or clip to hold it together.

No separate case to lose. No complicated folding instructions. Just pull and roll.

Which Shupatto Should You Choose?

Shupatto bags come in two main types: the classic Compact Bag and a range of more specialised styles. Here's a breakdown of each.

The Classic Compact Bag (S, M & L)

This is the original, the one that started it all. Same one-pull folding mechanism, pleated polyester construction, just in three different sizes depending on how much you tend to carry.

Compact Bag S (7.5L)
The tiniest of the trio. Fits in a coat pocket and holds enough for a quick convenience store run or an emergency extra bag when you're travelling light. Perfect if you want something truly unnoticeable until you need it.

Compact Bag M (15L)
The everyday classic. Big enough for a regular supermarket trip or a day out, small enough to tuck into your handbag without noticing it's there. When folded it fits in the palm of your hand. This is the one most people reach for first.

Compact Bag L (40L)
The big one. A full weekly shop, a gym bag, a market haul — it handles all of it, and still folds down to roughly the size of an avocado. Genuinely impressive.

The Specialised Styles

Once you've tried the classic, you might find yourself wanting one for every occasion. These three are worth knowing about:

Recycled Bag (15L)
For the eco-conscious shopper who doesn't want to compromise on design. Made from 100% recycled polyester from plastic waste, produced from a single continuous piece of fabric to minimise material waste. Same M size, same one-pull fold, just with a cleaner conscience. Available in beautiful colour ways like Autumn Glow, a warm gradient that looks anything but recycled.

DROP Bag (16L)
This one turns heads for a different reason entirely. Instead of the classic rectangular tote shape, the DROP has a distinctive rounded teardrop silhouette that makes it unlike anything else on the market. Same one-pull fold, same compact size when rolled up, but a shape that feels more like an accessory than an ordinary shopping bag. If you want a foldable bag that also doubles as a style statement, this is your one.

Insulated Bag (20L)
your summer companion. Keeps cold things cold and warm things warm, with a zipper closure to keep everything secure. Perfect for picnics, festivals, beach days with snacks, or a big grocery run when you don't want your ice cream melting on the way home. It folds flat with the same one-pull mechanism, so it takes up zero space until you need it.

✦ ✦ ✦

Mesh Bag (25L)
Lightweight, breathable and genuinely stylish. The see-through mesh is perfect for the beach (sand falls straight through), the market, or anywhere you want to show off what's inside. It's also very much having a fashion moment right now, so it doubles as an accessory as much as a bag.

✦ ✦ ✦

Packable Bag (27L)
Built for life on the move. Grade 5 water-repellent material and a zipper closure keep your things dry and secure whether you're cycling in the rain, heading to the gym, or caught off guard by unpredictable weather. The zip is a big deal: unlike open-top totes, nothing falls out when the bag tips over. A proper everyday workhorse.

What I Like About It

🤲 The folding mechanism is genuinely satisfying
There's something almost addictive about the one-pull fold. Once you've done it a few times it becomes muscle memory, and you'll find yourself wondering why every bag doesn't work this way.

☔️ It's water-resistant
The polyester material repels light rain and splashes, which is exactly what you want from a bag you're throwing into your bike basket or taking to the market.

🪶 It's lightweight without feeling flimsy
The material is durable and the construction feels solid, but the bag itself adds almost no weight to whatever you're carrying.

✨ The designs are beautiful
This is not a boring eco bag. Shupatto comes in a range of colours and patterns, from simple solid tones to more expressive prints like White Birch and Evening Mist. They're bags you actually want to be seen carrying.

🫧 It's washable
Pop it in a laundry net on a delicate cycle and it comes out good as new.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

No bag is perfect, so in the spirit of an honest review:

The bag is not waterproof, just water-repellent. It'll handle a light shower or a splashy market stall, but don't submerge it.

The compact sizes have a weight limit (around 5kg for the M), so it's not the bag for carrying heavy books or a full case of wine. The larger sizes can handle more, but it's worth being mindful.

So, Is the Shupatto Bag Worth It?

Yes, genuinely. It's one of those products that sounds like a gimmick until you use it, and then you immediately want to buy one for everyone you know.

If you carry a bag every day, forget your tote at home more than you'd like to admit, or simply want something that works a little smarter, Shupatto is worth every cent.
